Derek is an Australian videographer, photographer, podcaster, and gardener. That's all that will fit in this box though. Really, he can do anything. Srsly.

SPAMMER PSA: shaunmarsh78

This is for any community leaders and/or admins of social media websites. Please read on.

I recently discovered a spammer on Viddler that listed their accounts on other websites (mostly social bookmarking sites like delicious, Digg, etc). They only listed 5 or 6 accounts, so I went around to those sites and e-mailed them about the spammer.

The spammer posted links to various dodgy jewelery and dentist websites. I received a good response back from most of the social bookmarking sites, thanking me.

Now I have found another spammer that’s on a much bigger scale than just a handful of websites.

NB: These days, it’s difficult to tell the difference between a spammer and a link whore. Lately, I’ve received many comments on my blog and the Viddler Blog saying things like “This is really informative. [insert keywords relevant to the post here]”. I consider these spam if they don’t have a real name and/or link to a shopping/marketing/dating website.

I’d like to go around to every website this recently discovered spammer is on and tell the community manager/admins there, but I feel it’s going to take up far too much time (even if I do copy and paste the message each time). Hence, I’ve decided to inform everyone via this post.

The username is: shaunmarsh78

He/Her/It posts the same message on every site. The message basically tells people to check out [uploaded dot tv] to get your videos shown on television. The aforementioned website is a video sharing website. From what I can tell it’s legit, but this is not the way to promote a website.

The spammer even has a Twitter account, commenting on Twitpic images with messages like:

“That’s a nice dog. Please visit the website uploaded.tv where u can upload videos, music, n photos …”

If you’re familiar with spammers, then you’ll understand me when I say the user signed up to Viddler with an e-mail that just looks spammy. Excuse me, if I’m being to vague; I just don’t want spammers to come across this and think ‘Grr. They know our secrets. We must try harder.’ Everyone hates spammers. No one wins as being a spammer.

A quick Google search shows all the accounts this spammer punk has created. The top 10 results show profiles on YouTube, mp3.com, en.sevenload.com, grindtv.com, last.fm, blogtv.com, ka.uvuvideo.org, flowgo.com, freaknfunny.com, and lastly the Twitter.

Let’s team up together and crush this punk! (Maybe there should be a service for PSAs like this where community admins can share their findings.)

Also posted on my blog.
